More Sparrows Lock Tools - Sentry - Ultra Decoder - Snap Gun

Details
Category: Tools
Created: Sunday, 09 December 2012 20:10

For any MIL / LE folks that had their eyes on the Sparrows Tuxedo Set, this new Sentry set is certainly worth looking into. The main upgrade is certainly the case where it is made to mount on both PALS and velcro. The unit comes with a long Malice clip for solid mounting and then the hook velcro spots on the back offer quick attachment to loop velcro that is commonly on tactical vests as well.

Sparrows Lock Pick Tools

Thanks to ITS tactical I was able to get a crash course on basic lock picking and Sparrows was nice enough to get a starter set my way to play with. This "Tuxedo" set includes 6 tools and 6 tension wrenches with a bonus little case. I still have plenty to learn, but from what I know so far, lock picking is quite the interesting skill set combining technical knowledge with hand finesse dexterity. Although most pickers will have favored tools, the benefit of having a some sort of set becomes very apparent when working with lock variety. Lock sizes from smaller padlocks to common house locks can vary greatly so having the right size tool speeds up the process quite a bit and in tough cases it makes picking possible at all.

Screwpop 4-in-1 Keychain Tool (Black)

Here is a lil something for the EDC crowd. There are a lot of cool guy bottle openers out there, but Screwpop found a good way to integrate further functionality. The end holds a custom double sided screwdriver bit (Phillips #2/Flat Head #2) which in daily urban life is one of the most common used tools. I haven't had a chance to confirm, but the bit holding area is supposed to work as a 1/4” Hex Nut Driver as well. Chances are slim you'll use that part, however it is better than having some other crazy connection system that won't work for anything else. The bit is held in place by a spring loaded ball, which is sufficient for a hold. The bit grip will feel low to some, but it won't shake out and the bit can be manually pulled out without much hassle. Perhaps a magnet could be added for extra piece of mind, but appears it would be unnecessary at the end of the day and add to cost. The bit sizing is a little off compared to traditional 1/4" hex bits so the ones I tried from separate bit sets were too big and would only insert slightly in.

M34 Tactical (ARMT) Assault Rifle Multi-tool

Those on the hunt to find a compact AR tool package may find interest in this tool from M34 Tactical. The ARMT (Assault Rifle Multi-tool) finds a balance of adding quite a few tool functionalities while still offering a nice grip that is uncommon in similar type tools. Offhand my favorite ability is being able to adjust the castle nut (that wacky ring securing the buffer tube) without it being a large tool. It won't be as easy as a armor's tool made just to rock castle nuts all day long, however the ARMT is a lot smaller.

Survival Metrics Military E&E Kit

I'm no survival master so it was nice to be able to check out this kit to expand my experiences. Survival Metrics offers several kits and survival type supplies, however this kit was specifically made with the intent for military operations in a E&E (Escape and Evade) type situation. With this concept the main idea is to make the kit as small and lightweight as possible so it takes a very careful balance of what all is included.

SOG PowerLock Multitool with V-Cutter

Details
Category: Tools
Created: Saturday, 23 August 2008 03:50

SPECS:
Closed: 4.6"
Open: 7"
Weight: 9.6 oz.

SOG has a lot of variants on their PowerLock series so it is a little hard to narrow down this model, but I believe it is the PowerLock w/V-Cutter S62. I haven't tried a lot of multitools so thought I would mix things up with this guy. First impressions are that it is heavy duty and made from good materials. Kinda has a steampunk look to it. Unfolding from the closed to open / plier position is unexpectedly smooth. It takes some getting used to, but with some practice one can whip the SOG with one hand from closed to open position. The "gear driven compound leverage system" the plier functionality is built on works fantastic. The pliers have the usual wire cutting features, yet also have crimpers good for civie and MIL uses.

Tired of having fruity or overly hi-viz EMT shears? Check these out! Main blades are stainless steel with a black durable passivated low-light finish. The handles are made of impact resistant composite in a Foliage Green based color to look good near ACU / UCP gear. The first intended use is to cut clothing off the wounded to treat them, but they can be used for many more cutting needs.
*Update, now available in black blades and handles.

Bonus note: Last picture shows them in loop panel I designed which is now standard in county comm responder pouches. Sporting a new "Extreme Brown" exterior which is like sewer green, but more brown.

COUNTY COMM Kershaw T-Tool

Since I don't have a big Torx screw set this guys comes in handy to adjust the clips on my knives. Very compact and lightweight, it comes with the most common screw heads to adjust your knife clips. To use, just unscrew the ring end and pour out the bits. Place the desired bit in the other end, which will be magnetically held, and get down to business. The bit sizes specifically include: A Torx T6, T8, and a Philips head driver. Overall length is about 4" and the handle is made of aluminum with a slick teflon coating.

COUNTY COMM EOD ROBOTICS BREACHER BAR

Details
Category: Tools
Created: Thursday, 06 December 2007 03:46

Designed by EOD Robotics, this bar makes a great hand-sized pry bar. Core specs include that it is made from 1045 High Carbon Steel and Fully Heat Treated to a Rockwell Hardness of over 45. They come raw, which is still plenty usable, but spend a little time to get a 550 cord wrap on there and you will have a sweet custom grip. The built in holes make this task easier and more secure. The business end has a wedge up top and at one side, while full flat thickness is on the other side for strength. The bottom end has blunt cut edges giving it a shape good for a grip and a striking side whether it be a window, someone's head, or for a hammer assist. If one were motivated the pry edges could be sharped to make some form of combat bar, but I kind of like it cheap and rough like it comes. This way you will never worry or hesitate to ram it into anything, throw it around, misuse, and generally treat like a redheaded stepchild. As a warning: once you get one in your hand you will have a incredible to urge to pry/breach anything, likely ignoring reason and logic until said goal is accomplished.

COUNTY COMM Stainless Steel Peanut Lighter

Details
Category: Tools
Created: Thursday, 06 December 2007 03:45

These are new gen versions of the original Peanut Lighter with improvements including: quality materials, removable lighter core, and flat bottom to stand upright. The removable lighter core allows the item to be used a a mini waterproof pill capsule. Functionality is classic using a spark wheel for ignition and a wick to reach the fuel (standard lighter fluid). As for reasons why use one of these instead of say a zippo? Well the small size and keyring make the Peanut Lighter much more keychain and pocket friendly. The fact that the top screws on to make a waterproof seal also can make it more storable without losing reliability. As for my immediate uses, I plan to use it more on my sewing projects instead of crappy disposible lighters since the Peanut Lighter is much more durable and can be refueled.
