Packs/Bags

MAXPEDITION FLIEGERDUFFEL Adventure Bag:

Details
Category: Packs/Bags
Created: Tuesday, 17 March 2009 06:56

Dimensions:
Overall size 22” long x 14” wide x 9” high (45 linear inches)
Main compartment approx 21” x 13” x 8” with tie down strap
Top exterior sleeve pocket 10” x 6”
Internal mesh pockets 10” x 5” x 2” (two)
External slip pockets 14” x 4” (two)
Approximate Capacity: 2380 cu. in.

The DoppelDuffel is a great all purpose bag, however was a little bit bigger than most airlines wanted to deal with. The result is this FliegerDuffel variant which is slightly modified to be an acceptable size for carry-on in accordance with FAA regulations and most airlines. Despite being overall smaller, the shape is actually a little wider than the Doppel where you can see the Flieger has 8 PALS channels on the top rather than 6. Almost all of the core features are on the Flieger such as: 4 compression straps, long side zipper pockets, lock-able main zippers, beefy handles on top and both ends, removable shoulder strap included, 2 interior lid mesh zipper pockets, and an awesome stow-able backpack strap system.

Besides the overall size, one of the main changes would be the top central pocket is more flat and slim on the Flieger where as this pocket is able to expand more on the Doppel. The Flieger also got rid of the interior dividers so the main compartment is overall bare bones now. I didn't use them much anyway so I'm not fretting as more storage space is gained.

As I said earlier on the Doppel review, I'd still like to see the side PALS arranged horizontal rather than vertical since the pack is off my back more often than on. I do also wish the top middle pocket on the Flieger had some flexibility to it rather than being so flat/slim, but I can see this as a design decision to make carry-on easier. These days where some airlines tax you just for 1 check in, the Flieger is a nice way to max out your carry-on capabilities. I highly recommend it for a range/gear bag and travel bag. The main compartment zipper layout makes it really easy to open this pack wide open for immediate accessibility. Currently available in Black, OD Green, Khaki, Foliage, and ACU colors.
